PCOS is characterized by a range of symptoms and hormonal imbalances, which can vary from person to person. It is a complex condition with multiple potential features, but it is typically diagnosed when a person exhibits at least two of the following three criteria:| 1. Irregular Menstrual Cycles: PCOS often causes irregular periods, meaning that menstrual cycles may be longer or shorter than the average 28 days, or periods may be skipped altogether.| 2. Excess Androgen Levels: Androgens are male hormones that are also present in smaller amounts in females. In PCOS, there is an excess of androgens, which can lead to symptoms such as acne, excessive facial or body hair (hirsutism), and male-pattern hair loss (alopecia).| 3. Polycystic Ovaries: On ultrasound imaging, the ovaries of individuals with PCOS may appear enlarged and contain multiple small cysts (follicles). These cysts are immature egg-containing sacs that can give the ovaries a polycystic appearance.|
